Amy O'Connell

Biography

Amy O’Connell founded Reformation Pilates in 2022 as an enhancement for her personal training clients.   Having served Long Island’s south shore as a yoga instructor and a NASM-certified personal trainer since 2009, Amy was excited to share her passion for Pilates with her clients and basically, anyone who will listen.  Amy was trained through Polestar Pilates, a global leader in Pilates teacher training that is present in over 50 countries and has been around for over 30 years. Amy is a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT), which certification is a top-level, industry-recognized credential for Pilates teachers, administered by the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP). It requires completion of a comprehensive training program, which is a minimum of 450 hours and covers mat and all equipment (Reformer, Trapeze Table, Chair, Barrels) and passing a robust written exam with continuing education requirements of 16 credits every two years.

Amy’s Mission

Amy has been a lifelong athlete – a soccer player, runner, competitive cyclist, and outdoor enthusiast. Given her enthusiasm for anything that keeps her outside and moving, Amy has many battle scars to show for it. Amy discovered Pilates while working through an injury and fell in love with the practice, so different from the high-intensity training she was used to. She couldn’t understand why she loved it so much since she didn’t feel like she had killed herself after each session, but actually felt renewed and invigorated. She could be heard telling people, “When I lie down on my reformer and snuggle up against my shoulder rests, I feel like I am plugging into my charger. I have been reformed!”  If you are familiar with a Pilates reformer, you will understand the image. And that is how she came up with the name of her business, Reformation Pilates.

Amy has always been client-focused and curated her programs to meet her clients’ unique needs. Understanding her client’s individual needs and goals and curating programs specifically and especially to achieve those goals are what have made Amy stand out as a personal trainer and now a Pilates instructor. A Pilates practice is useful for everybody and everybody. Amy always says, “If you are a human that wakes up in the morning and breathes, then you can benefit from a Pilates practice, and I can program a session for you that will be meaningful and provide a positive movement experience.”

There is a therapeutic value to the practice and Amy’s specific training, but there is also a pre-therapeutic value. Understanding and practicing appropriate and efficient movement mechanics and alignment of the skeleton can make spontaneous movement safer and more effective. This practice can be useful for young athletes, experienced movement practitioners, adults just embarking on an exercise regimen, and can particularly benefit older populations. Amy services clients that are as young as 13 and up into their 80s.

Insights Into Pilates

Pilates is a movement method focused on developing strength, flexibility, and body awareness through controlled, precise exercises.
